The Army is planning to issue soldiers with a new rifle that could replace the M4 carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) reported May 3. The weapons will be issued to the service’s 100,000 close-combat forces and soldiers who are conducting similar missions, according to the report. Other new gear under development that will soon reach soldiers include dual-tube night vision goggles that provide sharper imagery through thermal-imaging technology. Additionally, female soldiers should start receiving protective equipment that fits them more adequately, AUSA reported.
