The Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) issued a warning Jan. 18, telling soldiers that online predators have been trying to establish ersatz cyber romantic relationships. Once these scammers convince unwitting victims of romantic intent, they then try to bilk the soldiers out of money, CID warned. “These perpetrators are definitely not American soldiers, but they are quite familiar with American culture. The criminals, often from other countries, most notably West African countries, are pretending to be U.S. soldiers serving in a combat zone or other overseas locations,” CID warned. Several senior officers and enlisted soldiers have become victims of the scam, CID said.
