In a ceremony that remained private because of COVID-19 concerns, the Navy commissioned its latest littoral combat ship (LCS) – the St. Louis – during an Aug. 8 ceremony. St. Louis is one of the 10 Freedom variants of the LCS, and will join its predecessors in missions that include countering diesel submarines, mines and fast surface craft. The vessels also have assisted in Coast Guard counter-narcotics missions. It is the 22nd LCS to be delivered to the Navy. The LCS platforms are built to accommodate quick changes of their mission packages, to meet specific mission needs.
