The Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s request to uphold the bar on military service by transgender persons. In a Jan. 22 order, the high court declined to hear cases against the military ban as well. The court approved the order by a 5-4 vote, with Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan dissenting. The ruling allows the Pentagon to begin separating openly transgender service members from military duty and forbidding transgender civilians from joining the service, until several cases pending in lower courts are resolved.
