Some retirees will have to pay a monthly enrollment fee to retain their coverage under TRICARE, the Defense Department’s managed health-care program, beginning next year.

The change affects those enrolled in TRICARE Select Group A – that is, those retired beneficiaries whose coverage began before Jan.1, 2018. Active-duty beneficiaries will see no change in their coverage, and will not have to pay enrollment fees.

Those who are affected by the change must set up a monthly allotment through the Defense Department pay center, and expect the payments to begin next Jan. 1.

Those who do not receive funds through the pay center should make arrangements to pay through electronic funds transfer, credit card or debit card. Regional contractors will soon provide further instructions. Individuals will pay $12.50 per month. The family plan will cost $25 per month.
