Religious social-services organizations could operate at Department of Veterans Affairs facilities under the same guidelines as those followed by non-sectarian groups, under a proposed change.
Present policy requires that religious groups could make referrals only under certain circumstances, and were required to post notices regarding referral procedures.
VA stated Jan. 16 that the planned change would bring the department into compliance with a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding “nondiscrimination against religious organizations.”
The new rule would allow religious organizations to apply for the same awards as any other organization that operates at VA facilities.
“Protecting religious liberty is a key part of ensuring that veterans, families and potential partners – no matter their religious beliefs – feel welcome to work and seek services from VA,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said.
