Veterans, paid and volunteer staffers, contractors, vendors and visitors to Department of Veterans Affairs facilities soon no longer will be able to smoke on VA property. A department-wide ban on tobacco will take effect in October, VA announced June 10. Smoking areas at all VA facilities will close. The move was made because of evidence that second-hand smoke can threaten the health of non-smokers. Also, a recent survey showed that 85 percent of all respondents favored smoke-free VA campuses.
