Veterans who were overpaid by the Department of Veterans Affairs will again soon be notified of their status. VA also began debt collections on Oct. 1. The department will not begin deducting debts from benefits payments until April 6. VA had suspended debt notification and collection last April 6 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Veterans who are notified that they owe the government money will be told of options available to them, to make the repayment burden as manageable as possible. These would include requesting debt relief, waivers, extensions, or temporary hardship suspensions.
Requests for benefit debt information are available online or by calling 800-827-0648. Medical care and pharmacy services copayment debt information also is available online, or by calling VA’s Health Resource Center at 866-400-1238. Both numbers are toll-free.
