Veterans who are indebted to the Department of Veterans Affairs will not see their benefits checks diminished – for the time being. Recognizing that many veterans and their families have been adversely affected by job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, VA has decided to extend debt relief. Certain debt collection actions have been suspended.

“Veterans and their families should be focused on their health and safety during the pandemic. VA is taking action to give those with pending debts greater flexibility during these challenging times,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said. Affected veterans will have the choice accepting suspension of collection, or extension of repayment terms on preexisting debts.
