We have covered LinkedIn in several past posts and for good reason, it’s a critical tool in your job search and employers – including many federal agencies that I work with, start there when reviewing your candidacy. (And you can start there by reading up on your employer or interviewer as well!) Following are some features you may not be familiar with:

  1. If you are a veteran or service member, LinkedIn will provide you with a one-year, one-time upgrade to a premium account—for FREE. Sign up through: veterans.linkedin.com. Starting in July, military spouses can get a free upgrade too!
  2. According to LinkedIn having a photo on your LinkedIn profile can lead to 21 times more profile views and 9 times more requests for connections. So, say “cheese” and smile!
  3. You can include your contact information (while still protecting your privacy). Don’t forget to include your contact information on your LinkedIn account (under the “see contact info” section). You should use a personal email (remember, no AOL!) and phone number. Do NOT include your birthday since that can be used by identity thieves.
  4. According to one recent article, 94% of all recruiters have active profiles on LinkedIn while less than 40% of jobseekers do…what are you waiting for?
  5. You can upload video to LinkedIn (as well as share PowerPoint presentations. Led a presentation lately? Consider videotaping part of it and posting it on LinkedIn. Keep your video to 2 minutes or less to get the most traction.
  6. LinkedIn has 5 mobile apps: LinkedIn, LinkedIn Connected, LinkedIn Pulse, LinkedIn Recruiter and SlideShare.
  7. LinkedIn Premium includes access to 10,000+ business courses on LinkedIn Learning. A great opportunity to learn something new or brush up on something old.
  8. Including 5 or more skills in your LinkedIn Profile will translate to as many as 17 times more views of your profile.

As much as many of us complain about social media, do yourself and your career a favor—get onto and use LinkedIn!
