Federal Manager's Daily Report

The CIO Council has launched a “code challenge” as a new tool for recruiting IT specialists, one of the fields the government has the most difficulty in hiring.

“To recruit the best qualified IT talent, in the most timely and cost-effective manner, we need to transform the federal IT hiring process,” the council said. “Code challenges are used extensively in the private sector to source and pre-qualify IT talent, and they are viewed as an industry best practice.”

The first phase, running through June 9, tests HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and core UX/UI concepts; the second, June 10-July 7, will test problem-solving skills, coding knowledge, and fundamentals using a coding language of the participant’s choice; the third, July 8-August 7, will test technical experience and software development operational best practices.
