Federal Manager's Daily Report

The CFO Council has launched a career development tool for those in federal financial management, which it said will help current and future employees in that field chart their careers and help management recognize and address skills gaps.

The tool at mycareer.cfo.gov, the result of an interagency design effort, “makes clear what competencies are needed to progress and excel as a member of the federal financial management workforce,” according to the announcement.

The site is to serve as “the cornerstone of the CFO Council’s efforts focused on improving how government recruits, trains, and retains top talent in financial management — a top priority for the Council. Nine years after the Government Accountability Office identified the financial management workforce as a challenge facing the government . . .  the community continues to experience critical financial management skill gaps as a record number of federal employees reach retirement age and prepare to leave the workforce, and a contraction as employees leave the government for the private sector.”

The initiative is part of a government-wide approach to address issues facing the financial management community that includes creation of the CXO Fellows program and updating competency definitions, it said.
