The White House has said it will devote some $1.5 billion of funding under the Inflation Reduction Act “build and upgrade America’s national laboratories and advance American leadership in science, research, and innovation.”

The funding boost for labs operated by the Energy Department and other agencies will be steered toward “innovative research in clean technologies,” a fact sheet said. “These investments will help the United States meet our climate goals while bringing down energy costs for American families, advancing U.S. energy security, and creating good-paying jobs.”

It said funding will be devoted in areas such as: more efficient building heating and air conditioning systems that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce indoor air pollution and reduce energy use; low carbon-emission aviation fuels; modernizing the electricity grid to promote the integration of clean power sources; increasing efficiency and reducing waste in industrial processes such as material production and water treatment; and research into fusion power.
