The Office of Personnel Management has announced that it
reviewed the re-employment rights of federal employees upon
their return from active duty before the House Committee on
Veterans’ Affairs, and offered support of legislation that
if passed would extend the period of health benefits coverage
for feds called to active duty from 18 months to two years.
It said it took its obligation under the uniform services
employment and reemployment rights act very seriously, and
recounted job protections such as returning individuals to
their former positions or ones they would have reached in
due course before being called-up.
There are currently about 15,000 feds serving active duty
and the additional coverage under the federal employees
health benefits program would cost about $10 million,
according to OPM.
