During voting on its version of the Defense authorization bill, the Senate rejected an amendment that would have allowed DoD to hold two more rounds of base closings, in 2003 and 2005. Since the House version of the bill does not include authority for further base closings, that effectively means the idea – which the Pentagon and certain military leaders in Congress have been pushing – is effectively dead for the year. DoD likely will try again next year.
