The mileage reimbursement rate for calendar year 2025 for using a privately owned vehicle on federal travel if no government-owned vehicle is available—the mileage of rate of most interest to federal employees—is rising from 67 to 70 cents per mile, the GSA has announced.
The rate for using a personal vehicle when a government-owned vehicle is available will remain 21 cents per mile (the same also applies as the standard mileage rate for moving purposes); for using a privately owned motorcycle will rise from 65 to 70 cents per mile; and for using a privately owned airplane will decrease from $1.76 to $1.75 per mile.
Rates typically apply through a calendar year but can change during a year due to significant changes in fuel prices.
GSA last year announced per diem rates for federal employees traveling on official business in fiscal year 2025, which started October 1, including an increase from $107 to $110 per day in the standard lodging rate for destinations without specific rates.
The range of the meals and incidental expenses portion increased from between $59 and $79 per day to between $68 and $92 per day.
The covered areas for specific destinations and the rates are at gsa.gov/perdiem.
If there is no lodging available at the rate for a location, employees may request that their agency approve an actual expense reimbursement, which may be for up to three times that location’s rate.
