The General Services Administration has announced a revised plan for the future of its Federal Supply Service warehouses that will result in the loss of about 300 federal jobs through the closing of two distribution centers and four forward supply points. GSA originally had proposed closing all such facilities, putting some 2,000 jobs in peril but backed off after pressure from the American Federation of Government Employees. The developments are being watched by civil service experts not so much for what happens to potentially affected employees but for the potential damage to labor-management “partnerships.” AFGE has been a strong believer in such arrangements but the fight at GSA has been testing its faith.
