GSA has increased the mileage reimbursement rates effective July 1 for using a privately owned vehicle on federal travel if no government-owned vehicle is available, from 58.5 to 62.5 cents per mile.

That follows an increase recently announced by the IRS in a comparable mileage rate used for certain tax-related purposes, also effective starting in July. The GSA typically follows the IRS’s lead on that rate.

The rate for when a government-owned vehicle is available but the employee chooses to use his or her own vehicle meanwhile is rising from 18 to 22 cents per mile. The rate for using a privately owned motorcycle is rising from 56.5 to 60.5 cents per mile, and for using a privately owned airplane from $1.515 to $1.81 per mile.

While mileage reimbursement rates typically are set at the start of the year and remain the same for the duration, they sometimes change in this way due to significant changes in fuel prices.
