Newly proposed rules will make it mandatory to “reasonably accommodate” handicapped employees in job reassignments. Under current rules agencies only have to “consider” accommodating them. Proposed rules published in the March 1 Federal Register by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission seek to bring federal employment policies regarding employment discrimination against the handicapped in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. That law, which generally governs the private sector, has some stricter standards than those applying under the Rehabilitation Act covering federal workers. (See related item below.)
