President Obama has signed into law (P.L. 114-75) legislation to grant 104 days of special sick leave entitlement to newly hired employees who have a military service-related disability rating of 30 percent or greater. They could use that much sick leave time for medical treatment related to that disability, with no loss to their regular sick leave accumulation. The additional leave would not carry over beyond the first 12 months of employment, however. The most recent OPM figures show that persons meeting that definition accounted for 11,200 of the 88,600 hired into permanent, full-time, non-seasonal positions in 2014.
