The House sponsor of a bill to take the civil service retirement fund off the federal budget, Rep. Michael Bilirakis, R-Fla., is pushing the House civil service subcommittee to hold hearings on the proposal. However, the bill so far has drawn fewer than 100 cosponsors. The idea is a priority item for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, which believes off-budget status would help shield retirement benefits from budget-cutting requirements.
