OSC Praises Bill to Aid Whistleblowers

The Office of Special Counsel has said that Senate passage of S-582, a reauthorization bill for the agency, is a step toward better workplace protections for federal employees against prohibited personnel practices including reprisal against whistleblowers.

“Importantly, the bill clarifies OSC’s ability to request and receive information from federal agencies. It specifically states that agencies may not assert common law privileges to withhold information from OSC …  improves protections against retaliatory investigations and other forms or reprisal, and requires managers across government to respond appropriately to disclosures of waste, fraud, and abuse,” a statement said.

The House earlier passed similar legislation but the changes won’t be final until differences between the two are worked out and final votes are held.
