The Biden administration has chosen 233 winners from 33 agencies for the Presidential Rank Awards, top honors for career employees in the SES and equivalent levels.

There are two categories of awards, distinguished and meritorious, with one grouping for SES members and a smaller one for senior level/senior scientific or technical employees, commonly called senior professionals. The “distinguished” award, worth 35 percent of base pay, can be granted to no more than 1 percent of an agency’s employees in such positions and the “meritorious” award, worth 20 percent of base pay, to no more than 5 percent.

Said OPM, “This year’s recipients are leaders across government, including a Department of Agriculture employee who established a Personal Protective Equipment distribution program to ensure that front-line USDA employees were protected and could continue to safely perform essential mission-critical functions nation-wide with no interruption in service delivery during the height of the global pandemic; a Department of Energy employee who led the nation’s development of and transition to high efficiency, zero-emissions electric vehicles and other technologies that decarbonize the transportation sector and enable more affordable mobility for all Americans; and a NASA employee who is accountable for the mission success of the James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s largest, most powerful space telescope offering a revolutionary full-color image view of thousands of galaxies.”

The program was reinstated last year after being suspended for 2020.
