Does former divorced spouse need to apply to OPM upon my retirement @ 62 to start their benefits?

Divorced spouse filed a QDRO (in 1999) for %50 of my annuity accrued as of divorce date. OPM sent me a letter stating that she would get %50 at my retirement (although it did not say “pro-ratia” which was bothersome). Will the deduction happen automatically or does my ex-spouse have to make some kind of application to OPM to start it? What is ex-spouses responsibility here? Thx !!

The ex-spouse should have sent a copy of the final decree to OPM. However, as a part of your retirement application, OPM asks you if you have a decree awarding a portion of your annuity or survivor benefit to a former spouse and then it goes on to require you to send a certified copy of your decree in along with your retirement application.

Thank you however, does the ex-spouse need to do anything to start receiving her share of benefits? I assume she did send in the decree to OPM as they sent me a letter stating as much at the time. I’m just wondering if the ex-spouse has any responsibility or need to follow any process at the time i turn 62.

Since you will be sending a copy of the divorce decree and she sent a copy, no, nothing else will be required.
