There are only two options available to permit your spouse to continue FEHB should you pass away first. A full survivor benefit which is equal to half of your FERS or a partial survivor benefit which is equal to 25% of your FERS. The costs are 10% or 5% and the cost is calculated at retirement and becomes a fixed amount although both your pension and your spouse’s entitlement go up by any COLAs applicable. In addition to electing a survivor benefit, your spouse must also be on your FEHB plan on the date of death in order to continue coverage.
