As a CSRS employee with 3 years military, if I retire after age 62, can I avoid making deposit without losing the three years?

I’m currently not eligible for Social Security benefits and was hired prior to 1982. If I retire after reaching age 62 and become eligible for SS several years after that, will my pension take a 6% hit? Could any Social Security benefit I can receive, minus WEP, be reduced for lack of military deposit?

The answer to your question is based on your eligibility for a Social Security benefit. Meaning, if you have not made a deposit for your post 1956 military service and you were hired prior to October 1, 1982, and you are eligible for a Social Security benefit , even if you do not apply for it, your three years of military service will count towards your eligibility to retire but will not be used in the calculation of your retirement, which results in 6% less in your pension. If you are not eligible for the Social Security benefit then there is no need to make the military deposit. However, If you were originally hired after September 30, 1982, the deposit must be made for both eligibility and computation purposes.

The simple answer if “NO!” What happens is OPM checks once, either at retirement if you are age 62 or older or at age 62 if you retired earlier. If you become eligible for SSA at a later date, your OPM pension does not change. Great strategy!
