Is the Social Security Supplement calculated in whole years or years and months? For example 29 years 6 months would equal ?/40? Also is accumulated sick leave used for the calculation of the supplement?

The FERS Retiree Supplement is based on full years of FERS civilian service which means no sick leave would be included. The manual states: •The numerator is the retiree’s total civilian service creditable under FERS, rounded to the nearest whole number, but not exceeding 40 years.

So…..if i retire at age 56 (my MRA) w/ 33yrs service and my monthly SS benefit at age 62 would be $2066 (according to mySS website), what is my monthly FERS Supplemental benefit? Is it 33/40 x $2066, or $1704 ? And, lets say i earn $25k/year outside the govt right after my govt retirement at age 56. How much would the $1704/mo be reduced to? thanks!

You have the correct formula for the estimated supplement calculation. For the technical response see the following link; https://www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/csrsfers-handbook/c051.pdf Your supplement will be reduced $1 for every $2 over the approved amount, for the year 2019 will be $17,640. See page 14 of the link above on the reduction for excess earnings.
