Colleague at lower level makes more pay, claim?

I am a nurse with 23 years of government time and have BS in health related field approved by VHA nursing board, plus 15 yrs DoD RN time that was not considered when I was reappointed to VHA. My colleague, also an nurse, went to my nursing school and graduated two years earlier and was hired in my department and makes more pay than I. However, she is a Nurse I, level 3, step 17. I’m a Nurse 2, step 6 – yet I make less than she does. Can I fight this?

Not knowing where you work, you can go to your local HR office and request a copy of the pay scale for your locale. Here is a link with all VHA nursing pay charts for 2018. https://www.va.gov/ohrm/pay/ As you can see a step 17 makes more than a step 6 even though you are a Nurse 2 and she is a Nurse 1. I do not see what basis you would have challenge this information but of course you can always try.
