When my ex-husband retires from his federal job, how long will it take for me to begin receiving retirement benefits? Do we both begin receiving benefits at the same time or is the schedule different?

The following statement is taken directly from a letter regarding former spouses benefits. "After your ex-spouse’s retirement claim is adjudicated, your electronic file will be created and the benefits will be paid retroactive in accordance with the court order. Please be advised that this is a lengthy process. The court orders are reviewed and processed in the order received and the former spouse’s file cannot be created until the retiree’s retirement claim is adjudicated." The following link is the pamphlet on OPM’s site regarding Court-Ordered Benefits for Former Spouses. Please begin reading on page 10 for complete information on how you begin the process to obtain any benefits to be paid to you. https://www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/pamphlets/ri84-1.pdf
