Retirement Benefits

Federal retirement benefits are based on years of service and salary. However, within that framework there are special rules for various circumstances. One goal of retirement planning is to get the maximum credit possible for service time, which can involve capturing or recapturing time for which no retirement deposits were made of for which deposits were withdrawn earlier. In addition, employees under the Civil Service Retirement System can gain service time credit for unused sick leave and can build up an additional benefit through the “voluntary contributions” program.
