Retirement & Financial Planning Report

If you’re interested in a no-risk way to double your money, consider STRIPS (Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal of Securities), which are constructed from Treasury bonds by major bond dealers. They’re safe, liquid and exempt from state and local income tax. Sometimes known as zero-coupon bonds, STRIPS pay no interest until they mature. At current interest rates, a $2,500 investment today will return about $5,000 or so in 2010. STRIPS are offered by many discount brokers. The catch? STRIPS generate a tax bill each year on money you never receive. Thus, they should be held in a tax-deferred retirement plan.
