Army Planning Wider Role in Space Domain

The Army is formulating plans to play a greater role in the space domain.

“Integrating joint and Army space capabilities into the operations process must become second nature to commanders at every echelon,” Chief of Staff Gen. Randy A. George said, as the service unveiled its Army Space Vision Supporting Multidomain Operations initiative. “We accomplish this by incorporating these capabilities into training, education, experiments and exercises.”

Fulfilling the initiative’s goals would require more investment in space capabilities and formations, the service stated in an announcement. The service’s space professionals are being charged with leading the effort to place soldiers in a position where they can work within the centers of excellence, combat-training centers and other services’ institutions. Training would entail the use of live and virtual environments that would be akin to those encountered in future complex and uncertain battlefields.

A vision paper accompanying the Army’s announcement expressed the need to create “expeditionary, scalable and mobile Army space formations, empowered by flexible command relationships at echelon, [which] should move alongside and keep pace with ground combat formations to protect forces and enable the Army to win decisively.”

In essence, service leaders believe a better understanding of space as a combat theater would provide better protection for ground troops and thus allow them to prevail in any fight.
“By design, Army space capabilities are built to collocate with and operate alongside ground maneuver formations, providing the appropriate effects for commanders to maintain timing, tempo and synchronization,” George said.

The integration of friendly assets within the Army, the other armed services, and commercial operators would pave the way for interdiction of adversaries by directing fires, observation, counter-surveillance and reconnaissance, navigation, and targeting of counter-satellite communications threats.
