The Army announced earlier this month that it has awarded an $8.66 billion contract to AM General LLC to produce 20,682 JLTVs (Joint Light Tactical Vehicles) and 9,833 JLTV trailers. The contract would span five base ordering years, plus five one-year optional ordering periods.
The service specifically wants the contractor to incorporate flexibility into the design that would allow for new technological upgrades with no sacrifice in capability. As it stands, the JLTV A2 design is the first tactical vehicle of its kind that uses lithium-ion batteries, which allow it to idle without consuming fossil fuel.
Soldiers and Marines rely upon the JLTV family of vehicles to provide mobility of both personnel and payloads during a wide range of military operations, while providing considerably better protection than the Humvee it is replacing. In choosing a contractor from the pool of bidders, the Army sought out the vehicle that would maximize the use of common components, as well as allow for the simplest maintenance procedures and training regimens.
