Chinese Hacker Pleads Guilty

A Chinese hacker pleaded guilty March 23 to hacking the computer networks of several U.S. defense contractors, stealing data, and transferring it to China. Su Bin, 50, entered the plea in a California federal court. The Justice Department pursued a criminal complaint against Su in 2014, specifically noting that he procured sensitive information regarding “certain fighter jets” and the C-17 transport aircraft between October 2007 and March 2014. “Su Bin admitted to playing an important role in a conspiracy, originating in China, to illegally access sensitive military data, including data relating to military aircraft that are indispensable in keeping our military personnel safe,” John P. Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said in a Justice Department statement. Su is scheduled to learn his sentence on July 13. He could receive a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the gain or gross loss resulting from his offense, whichever is greater.
