Guard Childcare Program Expands

More Army and Air National Guard members will have access to weekend childcare while they drill, under a newly expanded pilot program.

“It is our people who respond to disasters in our communities, saving lives and restoring hope in the face of devastation. And it is our people who uphold our American values – democracy, opportunity and the rule of law – and model those values for our allies and partners around the world,” said National Guard Bureau chief Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson as he made the announcement during a May 13 Pentagon ceremony. “But no one who serves in uniform serves alone. Our service is only possible with the support of our beloved families, who know both the pride and sacrifice of serving our nation.”

The change will expand access to a total of 20 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. It will provide childcare for both soldiers and spouses during drill weekends.

The Army and Air National Guard components make up roughly 20 percent of the overall Joint Force manning structure.
