Schools Compete in Robotics Challenge

An engineering team from the Georgia Institute of Technology took top honors in a recent robotics competition sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Foundation. The Georgia Tech team won the $10,000 top prize by producing the best “robo-boat” autonomous surface vessel. Competing teams had to complete two tasks and five missions, with no human intervention. Other top competitors included Florida Atlantic University, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nobember, and a group called Daytona Beach Homeschoolers. The competition took place in Virginia Beach, Va., in early July. The Navy hopes to use unmanned watercraft increasingly in the future for a variety of missions.
