A recent test has proven the viability of small drone aircraft with swarm capability, the Defense Department announced Jan. 9. During the October 2016 test, three F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft deployed 103 Perdix drones over China Lake, Calif. The small drones were able to make decisions, adapt their flying formation, and resolve problems autonomously during the test. The Pentagon’s Strategic Capabilities Office and Naval Air Systems Command oversaw the project, which originally was developed in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
