Agencies Encouraged to Grant Leave for Volunteer Work

The Office of Personnel Management has encouraged agencies

to use workplace flexibilities to allow employees to do

volunteer work in local communities, and has asked

department heads to add the President’s Volunteer Service

Award to their public service recognition programs.

It said agencies may grant administrative leave to employees

who perform volunteer work that directly relates to the

department’s mission and enhances the employee’s

professional development, provided the absence would be

brief and advance the interests of the agency. An April 6

memorandum to agency and department heads contains guidance

for employee volunteer activities, including information

on the use of leave and compensatory time to perform

community work.
