Complaint about Navy Emergency Training Confirmed, Says OSC

The Navy has strengthened controls over its emergency services training after a whistleblower’s complaint was confirmed, the Office of Special Counsel has said.

The OSC said that the Navy inspector general confirmed allegations that training records incorrectly reflected that some firefighters and emergency services employees had completed both mandatory and voluntary training that they had not attended or that had never even occurred–including in some cases training that is necessary to maintain credentials.

The OSC had asked the IG to investigate whether the agency was maintaining improper records and whether there was a safety risk from employees not receiving the required training.

The OSC said that the Navy has carried out recommendations including  additional verification of records and ensuring accountability for those signing off on training rosters. “The agency also reported that the new guidance stemming from the investigation will be formally incorporated into the next scheduled revision of Navy policy by the Chief of Naval Operations,” it said.
