GSA Raises Mileage Reimbursement Rate

The General Services Administration has announced that it

has raised the reimbursement rate for employees using their

automobiles for official travel from 40.5 cents to 48.5

cents a mile, retroactive to September 1, 2005.

GSA said it recognized the Internal Revenue Service’s POV

announced September 9, and that it takes into account the

costs of new vehicles and insurance, as well as the rising

cost of gas – currently it’s about one dollar more than a

year ago for a gallon.

Senator Charles E. Schumer, D-NY, has introduced legislation

– S-1678 – to increase the rate for all workers public and

private to 60 cents per mile. It would require GSA to set

the federal rate at 60 cents per mile through the end of

2006.

A companion bill is set to be introduced by Rep. John Lewis,

D-Ga.
