Labor Relations Board Mulling Consolidation

The National Labor Relations Board is considering a pilot project that would consolidate regional offices in St. Louis and Kansas City, as well as in Atlanta and Winston-Salem, S.C.

The pilot would be part of an ongoing effort to improve efficiencies in NLRB’s regional structure given “new technologies and changing patterns in case intake,” and would also include moving the sub-regional office in Peoria, Ill., from the jurisdiction of the St. Louis office to that of the regional office in Indianapolis.

According to the board, no regional offices would be closed in the plan under consideration, but staff in the consolidated region would report to a single regional director.

The pilot would give the board a better understanding regarding internal management and case processing. The board said a final decision is due in early April and that it would consider input from agency staff and from external stakeholders, including practitioners, members of the management-labor relations community, and Congress before making a final decision on whether to proceed.
