Legislation Targeting Charge Cards Offered

Legislation has been offered in Congress targeting the long-running issue of misuse of charge cards issued to federal civilian and military personnel, following a series of reports showing continued misspending despite a number legislative and administrative efforts to clamp down.

The House bill (HR-5922), sponsored by Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., would strengthen the federal government’s ability to continually monitor charge card spending and enhance information sharing to better identify and stop sophisticated improper payment schemes.

A similar bill (S-1616), sponsored by the leaders of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and other bipartisan senators active on government management issues, already has cleared the Senate.
