Managers Will See New Emphasis on Vet Hiring

A Presidential order designed to boost employment of veterans in the federal workplace includes a requirement for a strategic plan that will include marketing strategies aimed at agency hiring managers as well as veterans and transitioning service members.

The order calls on OPM to issue a government-wide strategic plan that will focus on creating leadership commitment and an infrastructure in each agency to promote continued skills development and employment success for veterans.

The order creates a Veterans Employment Initiative in the government to stress the importance of recruiting and training veterans, increase the employment of veterans in the executive branch, and help recently hired veterans adjust to civilian employment. It also creates a high-level Council on Veterans Employment to oversee the initiative and created Veterans Employment Program offices in most agencies that will be responsible for helping veterans identify employment opportunities there, provide feedback to veterans about their employment application status, and help their recently hired veterans adjust to civilian life and the workplace culture.
