The Office of Personnel Management has appointed the former
assistant inspector general for auditing at NASA, David
Cushing, to head its new office of internal control and
risk management.
It said the job of the office is to “tear down the drywall
and rip up the floor boards in an effort to address problems
at their roots,” and that it is looking to Cushing — who
developed NASA’s first inspections program at that agency’s
IG — to help improve financial management in the agency.
As a deputy associate director, Cushing will advise the
director of OPM on ways to ensure accountability, help
develop policy and procedures to manage “internal risk
efforts,” evaluate programs to reduce operational and risk
exposures, and coordinate audit activities with the inspector
general as well as track the status of corrective actions.
