New Chair of House Oversight Committee

Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., has been selected to replace Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. as the chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Towns has been with the committee for 26 years and chairs its government management subcommittee. The subcommittee held hearings this year on the presidential transition, managing the transition to digital television, border crossing cards, federal financial management and civil rights management at the Department of Agriculture.

Waxman gave up the seat to take over the House energy committee after ousting Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich.

The oversight committee also lost Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., who quit his post in November and joined Deloitte Consulting. Davis is being replaced by Darrell Issa, R-Calif. as the committee’s ranking member.
