OMB: Agencies Must Require Contractors to Verify Employment Eligibility

The White House is directing all federal departments and agencies to require contractors to process all their employees hired during a contract term and all persons performing work within the United States on that contract, using an electronic employment eligibility verification system.

“A large part of our success in enforcing the nation’s immigration laws hinges on equipping employers with the tools to determine quickly and effectively if a worker is legal or illegal,” said DHS secretary Michael Chertoff in suggesting agencies get contractors to use E-Verify.

Operated by Citizenship and Immigration Services in partnership with the Social Security Administration, E-Verify is an online system through which employers can cross check the names of new hires and social security numbers.

Agencies are already required to use the system for their own employees. DHS said companies that use the system typically clear all their employees.
