OMB has set a series of deadlines for agency actions in response to the Biden administration’s executive order on improving detection of cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents on government systems.
That order “directs the federal government to adopt a robust endpoint detection and response (EDR) solution as part of the shift in cyber defense from a reactive to a proactive posture. EDR will improve the federal government’s ability to detect and respond to increasingly sophisticated threat activity on federal networks,” says memo M-22-01.
“As the federal government continues to adopt an enterprise approach for cyber defense, it is vital that agencies collaborate in the development and deployment of EDR solutions to promote best-practice sharing and drive operational efficiency,” it says.
Required interim steps include providing certain information to the DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and analyzing the current status of EDR capabilities and identifying any gaps in existing EDR deployments. Longer-term actions include coordinating with CISA on future deployments, enabling “proactive threat hunting activities and a coordinated response to advanced threats,” ensuring that their EDR deployments are “appropriately resourced and staffed,” and more.
