Pentagon Announces Reduced Furlough Days

DoD has announced that it revised the number of days civilian employees will be forced to take furloughs from 22 to 14, while the start date for any furloughs has reportedly been pushed back to the latter half of June with notices expected to be sent out in early May.

According to an Air Force announcement, furloughs are to take place over seven, two-week pay periods during which employees must take two furlough days in each period through the end of September.

Congress recently passed a defense-spending bill that preserves about $6 billion in operational funding that would have been lost under sequestration. "It reduces a shortfall at least in the operations budget," defense secretary Chuck Hagel said, adding, "We came out better than we went in under the sequester, where it looks like our number is [now] $41 billion’ in cuts.

DoD still projects it will be out $22 billion for operations and maintenance, with base operations and maintenance and training for non-deployed units likely to see significant cutbacks.
