Sweeping postal reform legislation is back on the table for
the new Congress, according to a statement issued by the
House Government Reform Committee.
It said Committee Chairman Tom Davis, R-VA, and other
congressional leaders have reintroduced as HR-22 the
Postal Accountability Enhancement Act, which gained
considerable bi-partisan support and collaboration last
year before stalling over provisions shifting the cost
of military retirement benefits for employees back to the
Department of Treasury.
“First-class mail volume is declining while the number of
addresses is increasing, and the Postal Service has but
one mechanism — raising rates — to make up the difference
between its falling revenues and rising costs,” said Davis.
