White House Nominates Counter-Narcotics Chief

President Obama has announced a senior DEA official as his pick to lead the DHS Office of Counter-narcotics Enforcement.

Grayling Williams currently serves as the executive assistant to the operations chief for the DEA’s Operations Division. According to his official bio, since 1987 Williams has served as special agent and criminal investigator, special agent instructor at the DEA training academy, and more recently as chief of the agency’s Policy and Source Management section.

In this new role Williams will be tasked with coordinating counter-narcotics policy and operations within DHS, while working with the department’s federal, state and local partners to detect and disrupt drug trafficking operations.

DHS secretary Janet Napolitano issued a supportive statement, saying, "Grayling’s years of experience in law enforcement and counter-narcotics will enhance our coordinated efforts with federal, state and local partners to interdict drug traffickers and disrupt their links to terrorism and organized crime."
